Warm and authentic, she became a symbol of hope during the Second World War when her radio show, Sincerely Yours, brought comfort to millions, especially servicemen far from home.
After the war, Dame Vera stayed important through decades of musical change, continuing to record, perform and win new fans even in her eighties and nineties. She was a tireless campaigner for charity and her work lives on through her eponymous foundation dedicated to helping children with motor learning impairments.
