This 2022 The 100th Anniversary of the Discovery of Tutankhamun’s Tomb £5 marks the centenary of one of archaeology’s greatest moments – the Discovery of Tutankhamun’s Tomb.
On 26 November 1922, archaeologist Howard Carter raised a candle to peer inside the tomb of an Egyptian pharaoh.
After five years, the expedition had achieved very little. Frustrated by the lack of progress, Lord Carnarvon was about to put an end to the search when Carter pointed out that the ground beneath some ancient workers’ huts had not been excavated. On 4 November 1922, Carter and his team found the first stone step leading down to the tomb of Tutankhamun.
The £5 coin features an original reverse design by Laura Clancy, a product designer at The Royal Mint, which shows Tutankhamun’s iconic gold mask. It is accompanied by a booklet that brings the story of the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb to life.
The 2022 The 100th Anniversary of the Discovery of Tutankhamun’s Tomb £5 is available as a £5 Brilliant Uncirculated Coin, £5 Silver Proof Coin (Limited Edition 1922), £5 Silver Proof Piedfort Coin (Limited Edition 800) and £5 Gold Proof Coin (Limited Edition 200).
