This salmon florin was first produced for coins of the Irish Free State at the start of the twentieth century and is from Royal Mint’s new Animals on Coins Collection which celebrates the beautiful design that features a Salmon on the reverse.
Salmon start their lives in rivers and streams, living there for two to three years before they make their way towards the sea. After living at sea for a time, adult salmon will journey back to their birthplace to lay eggs of their own. Depending on the stage in their life cycle, there are several different terms for salmon. They begin life as ‘alevins’ when they hatch, develop into ‘fry’ and then ‘parr’, and develop into ‘smolts’ on their journey to the sea.
