The Woodcock Farthing is from Royal Mint’s new Animals on Coins Collection which celebrates the beautiful design that appeared on the woodcock farthing of the early twentieth century.
Originally designed for coins of the Irish Free State coins, this coin formed part of a collection of designs that became known as the ‘Barnyard Collection’ by some. Artists were asked to use indigenous and domestic animals paying homage to Irish culture and heritage as the subject of their designs. Every member of the committee chose designs created by Percy Metcalfe, an engraver at The Royal Mint.
A favourite bird for hunting in the twentieth century, the woodcock is hard to spot because of its secretive nature and plumage that mimics the forest floor. The population of the native woodcock has declined and it is now on the Red List for Birds of Conservation Concern.
