The Royal Mint Experience opened its doors in 2016, and as part of the tour, you are given the opportunity to strike your very own coin. It is worth noting that the design of the coin alters, depending on what theme they are celebrating at the time of your visit.
The Royal Mint have just released the mintage figures for the Strike Your Own coins up to the end of 2018. This includes 9 coins from the Last Round Pound to the Nutcracker £5.
The lowest mintage coin is the Royal Wedding £5 with just over 500. £5 coins are not the most popular denomination to collect so although the figure was very low it wasn’t a complete surprise. The other £5 coin in the list had a mintage of 3,808 and the Nutcracker is sold on ebay for around £42. Christmas coins are always popular so that would explain its higher mintage.
The post popular Strike Your Own coins were the Last Round Pound with 40,848, and the New £1 with 45,726 which isn’t a surprise as the £1 is one of the icon UK coins in circulation.
The biggest surprise was that very low mintage of the Issac Newton 2017 coin at 4,957. The Royal Mint decided to change the date of the coin to 2018 when they continued the tour from January to March 2018. The 2018 Isaac Newton 50p is currently the rarest 50p with a mintage of 20,826 and is currently sold on ebay for around £40. Its position at number one could change when we find out the mintage figures for the 2020 Olympic 50p.
