This 2020 Gentoo Penguin 50p is the second in a new series featuring four Penguins on behalf of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands Government.
The Gentoo penguin is easily recognisable by the wide white stripe which extends across its head like a bonnet. No one knows where the name ‘Gentoo’ comes from but they do live up to their Latin name Pygoscelis which means brush-tailed. The Gentoo has the most prominent tail of all penguins which sticks out behind and sweeps from side to side as they walk.
This 50p coin is available as a Coloured Cupro Nickel Diamond Finish limited to just 2500. The coin is sold in a capsule inside a blue pouch however you can buy a 2020 Penguins Collector’s Album which holds the four penguin designs in crown shaped Capsules. There is a Proof Sterling Silver Issue Limited to only 199.
As well as the Gentoo Penguin the others in the series will be the Chinstrap Penguin, Macaroni Penguin and King Penguin.
