This stunning HMS Erebus 50p has been released by Pobjoy Mint on behalf of the British Antarctic Territory to commemorate the 220th Anniversary of the Birth of the Captain James Clark Ross. He discovered the largest ice shelf in the Antarctic on his expedition.
Born in London on 15th April 1800, Sir James Clark Ross was a British Royal Navy Explorer. Between 1839 and 1843, Ross was given command of the ship HMS Erebus and led his own expedition to Antarctica and charted much of the frozen continent’s coastline, whilst being accompanied by HMS Terror.
